A Study Trip to England for BTS Timber Construction Students

From 20 to 25 September 2026, 24 second-year students and apprentices enrolled in the BTS Systèmes Constructifs Bois et Habitat (Timber Construction and Housing Systems) apprenticeship programme had the opportunity to explore southern England. Funded by the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regional Council, the study trip combined cultural discovery, international experience and, of course, a strong focus on timber construction.

From Brighton to London: Discovering England from a Different Perspective

The programme gave the apprentices the chance to experience different aspects of life in southern England. Blessed with particularly sunny weather, they explored the streets of Brighton and London, taking in the region’s heritage, architecture and everyday British life.

In Brighton, the Royal Pavilion immediately caught their attention with its distinctive architecture. They learned more about the ambitions of George IV in the early 19th century, as well as the work of architect John Nash.

At the Weald and Downland Living Museum, an open-air museum, the students stepped back in time as they explored traditional thatched cottages, historic shops and medieval farm buildings.

A Closer Look at Timber Construction

The trip was also closely connected to the students’ field of study. They were welcomed by Timber Frame It Ltd., a family-run company specialising in timber-frame housing, where they had the opportunity to meet Gary, Ash, Daniel and Mia.

The professional visit offered the students a practical insight into timber construction in the UK. Through technical discussions and English construction terminology, they discovered different approaches to designing and assembling timber frames, as well as to planning a construction project.

One particularly memorable moment came when Neil Brown unexpectedly opened the doors of his beautiful home in Hastings, built by the company, giving the students the chance to see the finished result firsthand.

A Challenge at Chichester College

The group also visited Chichester College, a campus welcoming around 5,000 students across a wide range of vocational fields, including hairdressing, hospitality, mechanics, construction and carpentry. Many thanks to Alistair Morrell, International Development Manager at Chichester College, for the warm welcome.

Ivor, a carpentry teacher at the college, had prepared a challenge for our students: to build a wooden model of a house based on a detailed set of specifications. This hands-on activity allowed them to put their technical skills to the test while working as a team and communicating in English.

A First International Experience for Most Students

Before this trip, only four of the students had previously visited England. For most of the group, therefore, this was their first international experience, and they greatly appreciated the opportunity to discover the country and meet its welcoming people.

A memorable international experience filled with new discoveries, new skills and plenty of shared moments, one that will undoubtedly stay with our students for years to come.
